The "Foliates" tiara
Cartier Paris, ordered in 1902
Silver, gold, diamonds, Height at centre 8.05 cm
Geneva, Collection Cartier, Inventory no HO 08 A02

The history of this tiara is a true survivor's tale. Put up for sale by Christie's of London in 1990, it was acquired by a diamond merchant to be taken apart. Without the intervention of Eric Nussbaum, and the understanding acquiescence of the merchant, who was willing to sell the gem to him, this historical tiara would, like so many others, have disappeared into oblivion. The letter of congratulations by the granddaughter of the Countess of Essex has been conscientiously preserved in the Cartier archives. This gem is an excellent example of the garland style of the House of Cartier.
